Personal tax advisor in Oxford & Oxfordshire - Simon Maughan & Co

Personal tax advisor in Oxford

Whether you need help with a Self Assessment tax return, have rental income to report as a landlord, or need to deal with a capital gains tax liability after selling a property, shares or other investments, we can help. As Chartered Accountants, we provide personal tax advice and accountancy services to private clients across Oxford, Oxfordshire and nationally.

When should you get advice from a tax advisor?

Personal tax can feel complicated — especially if you have multiple income sources, investment income, have recently sold a property or business asset, or are thinking about how to pass on wealth to the next generation.

We support clients with:

  • Self Assessment tax returns — prepared accurately and filed on time, whether you're employed, self-employed, or a director.
  • Capital gains tax (CGT) — when you sell a property, shares, or business asset, we help you understand your liability and claim all available reliefs.
  • Inheritance tax (IHT) planning — structuring your estate to reduce the IHT burden.
  • Rental income and landlord tax — ensuring your rental income is reported correctly and your allowable expenses are fully claimed.

As an Oxford-based personal tax accountant and advisor, we help private clients across Oxfordshire make sense of their tax obligations and structure their affairs as efficiently as possible. For a full breakdown, visit our personal tax and planning page, or contact us to discuss your needs.

How it works

01

Free discovery call

We talk through your situation — your income, any property or investments, past returns, and whether you even need to file. No obligation. By the end of the call, most clients understand if they need to submit a tax return and what’s involved, or what type of tax planning could help.

02

Clear, fixed-fee quote

Following the call, we'll send you a clear, fixed-fee quote. If you decide to go ahead, we'll send a simple checklist of the documents and figures we need from you.

03

We prepare, you approve, we handle the rest

We prepare your return, tax plan or advice and explain the numbers. Where there's something to file, we deal with HMRC once you approve, and we're on hand year-round if things change.

Tax advisor FAQs

A tax advisor helps you pay the right amount of tax — no more than you legally need to, and always on time. In practice that means different things for different people: if you're self-employed, it's making sure your self-assessment return is accurate and your allowable expenses are fully claimed. If you've sold a property or business asset, it's calculating your capital gains tax liability and identifying any reliefs you're entitled to. If you're thinking about passing on wealth, it's structuring your estate to reduce the inheritance tax burden on your family.

If your tax situation is anything other than a simple PAYE salary, it's worth talking to someone. The most common situations where people come to us are: being self-employed or running a limited company, earning rental income as a landlord, having sold a property or shares, receiving an inheritance, or approaching retirement and thinking about how to structure things.

A good tax advisor won't just file your return — they'll make sure you're not paying more than you need to, and that you're not caught out by a deadline or a rule you didn't know applied to you.

It depends on what you need — a straightforward self-assessment return costs far less than ongoing capital gains or estate planning, so we quote on your actual situation rather than a one-size-fits-all price. Everything is agreed up front as a fixed fee, so you know exactly what you'll pay before any work starts.

We also offer a free discovery call with no obligation, which is the quickest way to get a clear figure for your circumstances.

You'll usually need to file a Self Assessment tax return if you have income that isn't taxed through PAYE — for example self-employment or side income, rental income from a property, dividend or savings income above the allowances, or a capital gain from selling a property or shares. You may also need to file if you're a company director or a higher earner.

If you're not sure whether you need to file at all, that's one of the first things we'll confirm on a free discovery call — and if you don't need to file, we'll tell you.

Capital gains tax is charged on the gain, not the sale price, and how much you pay depends on your other income for the year and which reliefs and allowances apply. The rules differ for a second property or buy-to-let compared with your main home, which is usually exempt.

There are also strict deadlines — gains on UK residential property must be reported and paid within 60 days of completion. We calculate your liability, make sure every relief you're entitled to is claimed, and handle the reporting so you don't miss the deadline.

We're based in Oxford and work with clients across Oxfordshire. We also work with clients in London and further afield.

Many clients work with us entirely remotely, so location is rarely a barrier. If you'd prefer to meet in person, we're happy to arrange that at our Oxford office.
