Why Making Tax Digital (MTD) matters

MTD for Income Tax

HMRC is phasing in Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: it applies to qualifying income over £50,000 from April 2026, over £30,000 from April 2027, and over £20,000 from April 2028. Affected sole traders and landlords must keep digital records and file quarterly updates via MTD-compatible software and an annual tax return.

Simple systems

We help you choose MTD-compatible software that fits the way your business actually works, taking into account your sector and existing systems. If you are VAT registered, we can also support you with MTD for VAT, helping you stay compliant across both areas without the hassle of managing it yourself.

Tax advice

We keep the focus on tidy records, accurate allowable costs and clear deadlines throughout the year, so you always know exactly what is due, when it needs to be paid, and what your regulatory obligations are. That way there are no last-minute surprises, and you can plan ahead with confidence.

Avoid penalties

MTD introduces a new points-based penalty system for late or missed submissions. We keep your quarterly filings on schedule, so you stay compliant and avoid unnecessary fines.

Common questions

For landlords and sole traders who want support with rental and trading income, tax returns, and Making Tax Digital.

You keep digital records and file quarterly updates to HMRC using MTD-compatible software, followed by a final tax return after the tax year ends.

It applies from April 2026 if your combined gross income from self-employment and property is over £50,000, from April 2027 if over £30,000, and from April 2028 if over £20,000. We can help you check whether and when it applies to you.

Yes. We help you choose and set up MTD-compatible software so your digital records and quarterly returns are simple to manage.

The software subscription is paid separately to the provider — it's not bundled into our fee. Costs and options vary, from free through to paid monthly plans, so we'll recommend whatever fits how you work. In many cases a free or low-cost option is all you need — some business bank accounts even include MTD-compatible software for free if you bank with them. You can browse HMRC's software finder tool yourself if you want to see what's out there.

Prices start from £45+VAT per month, and that fixed monthly fee covers everything listed on this page, including your quarterly filings and year-end Self Assessment return. The exact fee depends on how complex your affairs are, for example multiple properties, share trading, VAT or other income sources. We will confirm a fixed monthly quote shortly after your free call. No per-filing charges, no surprise invoices.
